David Beckham joins the Draw The Line campaign

Malaria No More UK Leadership Council member David Beckham has long been passionate about the fight against malaria. Now, he joins the Draw The Line campaign alongside Zero Malaria champions and ambassadors to call for global action.

Malaria No More UK Leadership Council member David Beckham has supported the fight against malaria for many years. The disease causes needless suffering and preventable deaths, particularly among children under 5 – something that, as a father, David cares deeply about ending.

"I am proud to be a part of this amazing campaign, alongside many inspiring artists, athletes and champions from across Africa," says David. "World leaders have the power and responsibility to make change and create a safer, healthier, fairer world for all."

As a founding member of the Malaria No More UK Leadership Council since its launch in 2009, David is committed to using his platform to raise awareness. He’s now joined the Draw The Line Against Malaria campaign, appearing in the campaign’s newest film alongside an inspiring cast of champions and stars from across Africa.

"World leaders have the power and responsibility to make change."

Talking to malaria researcher Dr Nwamaka Akpodiete on the set of the film, David shared what attracted him to get involved in the campaign: "This new approach in getting people to talk about malaria is really exciting and innovative. It’s going to get people’s attention."

Malaria gains have taken a huge hit during the Covid-19 pandemic and the pressure is on for leadership to maintain focus and reverse stalled progress. David knows all about the power of teamwork, and that keeping up the energy is essential. "Staying focused under pressure is something that I’ve learnt over years of playing professional football. I think the biggest things are resilience, belief, and teamwork. Teamwork is such an important part."

"When you hear the statistics with this disease, people have to sit up and take notice."

Once they’ve seen the film, David hopes people will take action and join the movement at zeromalaria.org. He thinks it’s vital that world leaders use their power to make change. "I think that when you hear about the statistics with this disease, people have to sit up and take notice," David says. "This could be a real breakthrough – it could be one of the greatest stories in health."
